The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

The Ice Press
Last night I met Clark Ross, the head bartender at the Boiler Room, at the bar on his night off. He’d asked me a couple days before to come in because he had something to show me. Turns out it … Continue reading
Snow Adventure
Earlier this week in Omaha we had our first big snowstorm of the year. Since we live within walking distance of a bunch of midtown bars and restaurants, we set out on foot to see what was open. We landed … Continue reading
Giveaway! Perrier cocktails for the holidays
I’ve teamed with Perrier, who debuted its new slim can this fall, for a new holiday-centric giveaway. I love sparkling water and I drink it almost daily, especially after I gave up soda earlier this year. I sampled the slim … Continue reading
Vintage Cookbooks: The Sheldon Gallery Cookbook
Before I returned to journalism and started this blog, I worked at the Sheldon Museum of Art. I’ve always loved the graceful Philip Johnson-designed building on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend checking … Continue reading
Mulled Wine Party
It’s a tradition on the Hansen side of my family to have a wintertime mulled wine party. My mother-in-law brews up a big vat of mulled wine along with hot chocolate and hot tea and my father-in-law builds a big … Continue reading
An appreciation: Caffé Italia
Caffé Italia, hidden in a tiny strip mall in one of Lincoln’s off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, is one of those places that people who love eating dream of finding. I first went to Caffé Italia with my now husband when we had … Continue reading
My crazy week, in review.
So Chick-Fil-A and it’s soft opening and opening took over my life earlier this week. I can’t say I’ve ever seen so much frenzy over a fried chicken sandwich (or so much controversy over the politics of restaurant owners, for that matter.) I … Continue reading
Omavore Cocktail Night
We had a few friends over recently to try some cocktails created with Patron XO Cafe, which the fine people at Patron sent to me and asked me to try. My friends happily obliged, and my talented friend and fellow Word-Herald … Continue reading
