The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

China street style
I’m no Scott Schuman when it comes to taking street style photos, but I managed to capture quite a few snaps while we were walking around Beijing and Shanghai — and only a couple are blurry! Courtney and I talked … Continue reading
The real Kung Pao Chicken
SHANGHAI — During my nine days in China, I did not get to eat much Chinese food. That’s because, as luck would have it, I got sick on the plane to Beijing and I remained sick for the bulk of … Continue reading
China in a dozen days
Last night we hung out with our China traveling partners, Courtney and Michael. Courtney leaves Nebraska on Wednesday. The next time we see her, we’ll all be in Beijing. Time seems to have flown since my first post about China, … Continue reading

My husband and I, and two good friends of ours, are headed to China in May. I’m so excited. I’ve never been to China, but I’ve been doing a lot of reading about the food scene there, and I can’t … Continue reading
