The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

Food Prowl: Mac and Cheese
The macaroni and cheese food prowl was really fun. I had a blast hanging out with my tasters this month, Jeff and Kim. Their knowledge of the dish and endless opinions — just what I want when we’re prowling — … Continue reading
Jenny Coco on steak
For Chef Jennifer Coco, owner of midtown Omaha’s J. Coco and a James Beard-nominated chef, steak has to be cooked just so. She told me again and again during the two month Food Prowl for steak, which kicked off a … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Eggs Benedict
This month’s Food Prowl, for eggs Benedict, was the tightest race yet. Each of the three voters — me, chef Michael Rhoades and Derek Eskens of Gastronomic Fight Club — voted for one restaurant. Instead of a three-way tie, which … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Chicken Tikka Korma
The first thing I learned on this month’s food prowl for Chicken Tikka Korma, a classic Indian dish, was that I really didn’t know what it was supposed to taste like. I thought I did, and so did one other taster. … Continue reading
Food Prowl: The Old Fashioned
I realized this morning that I am quite behind on blogging about Food Prowls. Please pardon my tardiness and enjoy the belated updates. SBH This Food Prowl may have been the one I’d been most anticipating since January. I think … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Fried Chicken
You can’t even imagine how good the food inside this box is. And that’s why Time Out Chicken, on North 30th Street, is the winner of this month’s Food Prowl. It was the first place our team visited, and the … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Cheeseburgers
I had a seriously good time prowling for cheeseburgers with the awesome Vu sisters, An and Michelle, and the always charismatic Nick Strawhecker. We ate eight burgers over the course of a couple of weeks and hotly debated which one … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Tacos
The taco Food Prowl was the first one of the “summer foods:” burgers and fried chicken are up next. We had a lot of fun going around town eating tacos, mostly because my tasters — Johnny, Jessica and Paul — … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Cupcakes
The fifth installment in my year-long Food Prowl series is among the most controversial, after reuben and spaghetti. A lot of fans of Cupcake Island called and emailed me saying it was their favorite. I like that, though — when … Continue reading
