So this is the amazing Tofu Stroganoff of dreams that I made with Isa Chandra Moskowitz. She was gracious enough to let me and a World-Herald photographer hang out with her in her Omaha kitchen and cook recipes from her new cookbook “Isa Does It,” which is out now.
We cooked and talked, and Isa shared her top seven vegan bites in Omaha. Without further ado, here is her list.
» The rotating vegan special at Block 16, 1611 Farnam St. Isa’s had vegan burgers, vegan shepherd’s pie and lots of other creative vegan food here. “They go out of their way for vegans,” Isa said. Below, Block 16′s vegan bahn mi.
» Southern Noodle at Thai Spice, 2933 N. 108th St. Isa calls this dish “an unholy mix of carbs,” and it includes tofu, potatoes and rice noodles in a yellow curry sauce. She adds broccoli.
» The beet burger at Benson Brewery, 6059 Maple St.
» Ted and Wally’s Ice Cream, 1120 Jackson St., which has a daily selection of coconut-based vegan ice cream. Recent flavors have included coconut pistachio, cookies and cream and amaretto raspberry and blood orange sorbet.
» The BLT roll at Blue Sushi. Isa orders it without mayonnaise — the avocado keeps it creamy, she says — and it’s made with smoked tomato paper instead of seaweed. “It is so good,” she said.
» The Jam Sandwich at Kitchen Table, a meatless sandwich that features a different featured main ingredient sandwiched between homemade bread and condiments. The current “jam” is the sweet potato jam. Pictured above is the squashed jam, and its vegan without the cheese.
» The Isa Noodle — a dish named after her — at Crystal Jade, 7255 Cedar St. Isa orders the dish with mock duck, cilantro and broccoli, off-menu additions.
