Omavore Gift Guide: For the tea lover

As you are reading this post, I am out reporting on the madness that is Black Friday, and you can look for my story in Saturday’s World-Herald. In the meantime, I thought I would do a little gift guide post– the first of a few — to kick off the season of shopping madness.

Numi sent me a sample of its Artisan’s Tea Blending Kit, and I thought this would make such a lovely holiday gift for the tea lover in your life. I took the liberty of trying it out before I recommended it, and it’s a lot of fun. And at just over $30, it’s also totally affordable.

The kit comes with a tiny glass teapot (perfect for brewing at your desk at work, like I did), 20 tea sacs, four types of tea (green, white, black, rooibos) and six baggies of organic fruits, flowers, herbs and spices (mint, lemongrass, cinnamon, ginger, orange peel and rose petals.)

The kit also comes with a recipe book to suggest combinations. The first time I made tea, I underestimated how much one teaspoon of tea was, and the brew turned out pretty weak. The second time I used a lot more tea and it was much better. If you were using it at home, you would have measuring spoons so I don’t think it would be an issue.

My too-weak first attempt next to my stronger second attempt.

I sampled two of Numi’s recipes, the Tonic Spell (green tea, orange peel, lemongrass and ginger) and the Enchanted spice (white tea, orange peel, cinnamon and green tea.) Both were good. But the fun in this kit is the chance to make custom blends of your own; something any tea lover would love.
