Nebraska City

Over Labor Day weekend, Matthew and I drove down to Nebraska City. Normally we’d have waited until the Applejack Festival — read all about it in today’s World-Herald if you want to go — but we decided to avoid massive crowds and go on a mini-road trip a bit early. I took home a bag of those honey crisp apples above, and they’re truly delicious.

I grew up in Omaha, and an autumn trip to Nebraska City was something our family did every year. I particularly remember the food (no surprise). Chewy caramel apples, a big slice of apple pie with ice cream, warm cider on a crisp afternoon. Those are some of my favorite memories of this town.

We stopped for lunch in Plattsmouth at the adorable Riverhouse Cafe, where we had sandwiches and milkshakes.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you about our dinner in Nebraska City.
