The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

Dumpling making
When I visited China earlier this year, dumplings were everywhere. We ate them from street vendors and at restaurants and the fillings varied widely. A lot of the food we ate in China simply tasted better than the American imports … Continue reading
Nebraska City
Over Labor Day weekend, Matthew and I drove down to Nebraska City. Normally we’d have waited until the Applejack Festival — read all about it in today’s World-Herald if you want to go — but we decided to avoid massive … Continue reading
Veggies, root-to-tip
Today in the World-Herald, I wrote a story about eating the whole vegetable — the skins, the tops, everything. I first heard about this trend during a segment on The Splendid Table, one of my favorite NPR shows. Here’s a … Continue reading
Review: Italian Gardens
I was excited to check out Italian Gardens, the latest restaurant to open in the charming spot at 1228 S. Sixth St. The short form: Italian Gardens has promise. Owner Jeff Camp told me he wants to move the menu from … Continue reading
Review: Omaha Cheesecake Bakery
I’ve gotten a bit behind on posting my World-Herald reviews on the blog. I’ve got two to share, then I’ll do a new post, promise. First up: the Omaha Cheesecake Bakery, which I reviewed in early August. The short form: At first … Continue reading
Dundee’s The French Bulldog
I’ve been waiting all summer for my neighborhood’s newest restaurant to open. Over the weekend, it did. Mind you, this isn’t a review, as the World-Herald never reviews places before they’ve been open for at least a month. This is … Continue reading
Closet Clean-out, part one
I’m taking a break from food today to do a little blog post about my recent (ongoing, really) closet clean-out. In the past year or so I dove head-first back into thrifting, and I’ve acquired a lot. Exhibit A, below: … Continue reading
Nebraska Wine and the Drought
Last week I spent a morning at James Arthur Vineyard in Raymond, Neb., watching a crew finish one of the earliest grape harvests ever in Nebraska. I was there for a story I wrote for yesterday’s paper, about how this … Continue reading
