The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

TD Niche Pork and my “Locally Grown” series
The second story in my occasional World-Herald series “Locally Grown” ran on Sunday. It’s about Travis Dunekacke and his boutique farm, TD Niche Pork, where he raises heritage breed, pure bred hogs that he sells to chefs in Omaha, Lincoln … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Cheeseburgers
I had a seriously good time prowling for cheeseburgers with the awesome Vu sisters, An and Michelle, and the always charismatic Nick Strawhecker. We ate eight burgers over the course of a couple of weeks and hotly debated which one … Continue reading
Review: Taita
Food people have been spending a lot of evenings eating in Benson these days. Taita is the newest restaurant to join the neighborhood mix. The short form: There’s some dishes to like at Taita. I liked the ceviche and the … Continue reading
Weekend in Red Cloud
I should have done a better job documenting all the good food I ate this weekend at my in-laws farm in south central Nebraska. Instead, I relaxed. There’s a new pool at the farm, which makes it incredibly easy to … Continue reading
Happy Fourth
Hope your celebration was safe and happy, and included a patriotic outfit (like mind did) and good food and drink. Flag Cake via Smitten Kitchen. Gorgeous bangles via Frecklewonder. Caprese skewers that I’m making this weekend via With Style and Grace. Amazing … Continue reading
Dinner at Block 16
Block 16 started serving dinner a couple weeks ago, and on their second night of service we decided to check it out. Matthew and I both love their offerings at lunch, elevated street food that always includes lots of creative … Continue reading
