The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading → - Review: The Corner Creperie
I’ve been thinking about The Corner Creperie, which I reviewed last Friday, since my last visit. I think about the grain crepe, pictured above. I think about the latte. And the cappuccino. And the memorable preserved peaches in the fruit … Continue reading → - Review: Black Oak Grill
First off, apologies for the absence. Between getting sick for the better part of a week with the flu (ick!) loads of deadlines and lots of other stuff going on, the blog has suffered. But I’m back this week with … Continue reading →

Food Prowl: Tacos
The taco Food Prowl was the first one of the “summer foods:” burgers and fried chicken are up next. We had a lot of fun going around town eating tacos, mostly because my tasters — Johnny, Jessica and Paul — … Continue reading
Summer reading list
I’ve been doing my best to read as much about food, wine, dining and cooking as I can. Last week, when I got the James Beard Foundation newsletter in the mail, I was really excited to see, in the front, … Continue reading
Shanghai greens
If you read my dining review last week, you already know that one of the best things I ate in China were simple stir-fried greens. Last night, I decided to try and recreate them at home. More on that in … Continue reading
Eating the CWS
If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that I’ve been spending a lot of time since Friday at TD Ameritrade Stadium eating my way through the College World Series. Before the series started last week, I went to … Continue reading
Review: Pana 88
Since I’m freshly back from China, I thought it would be fun to review an Asian restaurant, and Pana 88 fit the bill. The short form: Pana 88 is a study in contrasts. I found soup and the above appetizer, … Continue reading
Food Prowl: Cupcakes
The fifth installment in my year-long Food Prowl series is among the most controversial, after reuben and spaghetti. A lot of fans of Cupcake Island called and emailed me saying it was their favorite. I like that, though — when … Continue reading
Review: J. Coco
I’ve been back to J. Coco since I reviewed it in early May, and my experiences continue to get better. On my latest visit, I had an excellent cocktail and a delicious sandwich — the roasted chicken with pancetta, camabert, … Continue reading
A belated birthday treat
I took my husband out for a belated birthday dinner on Saturday night, and he picked the Boiler Room as the spot he wanted to eat. When I called to make the reservation, Chef Paul Kulik asked me if I … Continue reading
Emerging Terrain Elevate Dinner
Yesterday, I covered Emerging Terrain’s second dinner event in celebration of new banners being installed on a grain elevator near Interstate 80 outside downtown Omaha. Though I covered the event, I never had a chance to sit down and eat … Continue reading
