The Insider’s Guide
My first book, The Insider's Guide to Omaha and Lincoln, is the first nationally published travel guide written about the two cities. It includes my take on more than 150 restaurants, including many you've probably never heard of before. My "Insider's Picks" throughout the book include favorite thrift stores, dive bars and hangouts. It also has practical sections: one on where to stay when you're visiting and a second perfect for students or people relocating to Nebraska.
Food Prowl
Food Prowl is a series of stories in the Omaha World Herald in which we examine what the city's restaurants have to offer and choose our favorite foods in a dozen categories.
Read all the stories about the places we prowled and the food we loved in 2012.

- Review: Louie's Wine Dive
The short form: I liked Louie’s. It’s what most high-end chains should aim to be. And it’s gastropub food is better than some of the other places I’ve been in recent months trying to do the same thing. I liked … Continue reading → - Review: Hutong Sushi Grill
The short form: I didn’t know what to expect from a west Omaha sushi joint in a strip mall, but I was pleasantly surprised with what we found at the Hutong Sushi Grill. Two things led me there — the … Continue reading → - Review: Brix Midtown Crossing
The short form: The dish above was one of the best things I’ve tried so far in 2013, and so my expectations were high while I was eating at Brix’s new location, in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant is still uneven … Continue reading → - Review: Kobe Japanese Steakhouse
The short form: I was in New Orleans when my review of Kobe Steakhouse came out, so that explains the delay in posting it here. The experience of eating at a hibachi grill is like no other — I found … Continue reading → - Review: Frank's Pizzeria
I am a fiend for New York style pizza. The short form: After the first couple bites of this “Special” pizza from Franks, a small west Omaha strip mall joint, I was in love. Subtle raw tomato sauce. Fennel-packed sausage. … Continue reading →

Chicken Adobo
My favorite cookbooks and food reading all come from the same place: Mark Bittman. I own at least four of his cookbooks and his iPad app. I loved his New York Times Minimalist column. Last night, I followed his directions to … Continue reading
Man vs. Food Nation: Omaha
Yesterday my friend and Omaha World-Herald sports reporter Sam McKewon and I tried one third of the Starsky’s pig wing challenge that appears on tonight’s episode of Man v. Food Nation. Watch the video here and read my story here. … Continue reading
Weekend adventure
Matthew and I took a mini adventure last weekend. We spent the afternoon at Too Far North tasting room, in Fort Calhoun. We were hoping for a drive filled with fall color, but I think we may have been a … Continue reading
On Green Tomatoes
This weekend, I started to tear out my tomato plants. I know not everyone had great luck with tomatoes this year, but I did — at the height of the season, I brought in a dozen or so a day. … Continue reading
Review: Dolce Cafe
Dolce Cafe is only a few months old, but already making a niche for itself in West Omaha as a comfortable spot for lunch or a potentially romantic dinner place. The short form: I had some issues with the atmosphere … Continue reading
Heritage Recipes
I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff come across my desk lately about “heritage recipes,” which are basically old recipes that have been recently rediscovered and updated for a new generation of at-home cooks. You already know this is right … Continue reading
I wrote a short story in the paper a few weeks ago about the web sensation that is Pinterest. If you haven’t heard of it, click on over to my story and learn what it is. I interviewed a few … Continue reading
Brussels Sprouts
No, those are not my Brussels sprouts. I planted four plants in my garden this spring, and they’ve grown to mammoth proportions, taking over more room than I thought they would. But so far, the plants haven’t produced one sprout. … Continue reading
Sunday Night Pot Luck: Chinese
For more than a year now, a loose group of my friends have been having monthly pot lucks on Sunday nights. These gatherings dwindle during the summer and pick up in the fall, when people feel most like gathering together … Continue reading
Mail call: beer
So I get LOTS of stuff in the mail at work. Lots of it is weird or sort of random or kind of funny. So I’m going to blog about it. In my first three weeks at the paper I’ve … Continue reading
